David was born in Buckinghamshire and was educated at Bedford Modern School before reading Geography at Cambridge University and Town Planning at Manchester University. He currently works as a town planner in local government. A keen violinist, he has played orchestral, operatic, musical theatre and chamber music for many years. He took up serious composition after joining COMA (Contemporary music making for amateurs) in 1997. This led to classes with Michael Finnissy, Andrew Toovey, Deirdre Gribben and Stephen Montague and private lessons with Diana Burrell. In 2002 David gained a post-graduate diploma in composition from the Royal Northern College of Music where he studied with Anthony Gilbert. David currently studies privately with Richard Causton.
His music has been played by members of the London Sinfonietta and by the New Ensemble of the Royal Northern College of Music and has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3. He has also written extensively for amateur players. His orchestral piece ‘Galeras’, is a homage to an active Columbian volcano and was shortlisted by spnm in 2003.
David was on the spnm composer shortlist from 2003–2005.
“Saturday evening saw a programme of chamber works in the Purcell Room, including the slightly anarchic shenanigans of David Breeze’s ‘Mixed Doubles’, a quirky but entertaining pygmy horn concerto.”
